Cat's claw is a large, woody vine that gets its name from the thorns that grow along the vine that look like the claws of a cat. Cat’s claw has been used medicinally by the indigenous people of the Amazon rainforest for over 2,000 years. Cat’s claw has been used in Peru and Europe since the early 1990 as an adjunctive treatment for cancer and AIDS 1-3 In the 1970's to early 1990's independent researchers in Spain, France, Japan, Germany and Peru published research on the immune-stimulating alkaloids in the vine and root. Many of these studies showed that extracts of Cat’s claw increased immune function by up to 50%. 4-11 These research results for Cat's claw were substantiated by Canadian researchers at the University of Ottawa (1999) and by Peruvian researchers (1998).12-13 In 2001 an Italian in vitro study of cat’s claw showed that it directly inhibited the growth of a human breast cancer cell line by 90%, while a different in vitro study of Cat's claw by another research group reported that it inhibited the binding of estrogens in human breast cancer cells. 14-15

Jergon sacha is a herbaceous perennial that grows in the Amazon rain forest. The Indian tribes use the tuber of the plant as an antidote for poisonous snake bites. In the 1990’s the Peruvian media reported that a Peruvian physician, Dr. Roberto Inchuastegui Gonzales, who was the president of the Committee of AIDS and Transmissible Diseases at the Peruvian Institute of Social Security in Iquitos, Peru was having remarkable results in treating AIDS patients with extracts of jergon sacha and cat’s claw. Dr. Inchuastergui reported that a majority of HIV patients treated with these extracts had tested negative for the HIV virus after taking these extracts for six months.
Protease inhibitors are a new class of drugs used to combat HIV that work by blocking the HIV protease enzyme. Proteases are also the main ingredient in snake venom. Anti snake venom herbs such as jergón sacha are natural protease inhibitors and may explain the reason Dr. Inchuastergui has had such remarkable success with AIDS patients.
Pau d’arco is a large tree found in the Amazon rainforest. It has been used in herbal medicine by the indigenous peoples of the Amazon rainforest for hundreds of years. One of the most potent chemicals in the pau d’arco bark and heartwood is lapachol. The phytochemical database at the U.S. Department of Agriculture has listed lapachol as being anticarcinomic, antitumorous, and antiviral.1 Another chemical in pau d’arco beta-lapachone has also demonstrated antiviral,2 and antitumorous,3 activity, with few side effects. In a 2002 U.S. patent, beta-lapachone was cited to have significant anticancerous activity against human cancer cell lines including: promyelocytic leukemia, prostrate, malignant glioma, colon, hepatoma, breast, ovarian, pancreatic, multiple myeloma cell lines and drug-resistant cell lines. 4
